Seminario “Uniform inference for Small Area Parameter”

Abstract.

Today, SAE is a common tool used world-wide by Statistical offices for addressing the need of disaggregated information. Interval estimates can either be extremely wide if not model-based, or only refer to marginal (ie unconditional) distributions. That is, when speaking of a 95% confidence interval, for 5% of the considered areas, the intervals do not contain the true parameter. This is a delicate default if political decisions based on them, and prohibits the comparing areas based on those estimates. 聽In this work, construction of uniform prediction intervals (or simultaneous confidence sets) for small area parameter in linear mixed models is introduced. We consider three frameworks to develop simultaneous intervals: analytical, numerical and bootstrap approximation. Proofs of the consistency as well as the asymptotic coverage probability of the bootstrap intervals are provided. Our proposal is accompanied by simulation experiments and data examples.

Conferencia 鈥淯rinary triclosan concentrations and diminished ovarian reserve among women from a fertility clinic鈥.

Urinary triclosan concentrations and diminished ovarian reserve among women from a fertility clinic鈥.

Resumen:

Background/Aim: Triclosan, an endocrine disrupting chemical used as an antibacterial in personal care and consumer products, has shown estrogenic activity in experimental studies. There are limited human studies on reproductive health effects of triclosan. The objective of this study was to prospectively investigate the association between urinary triclosan concentrations and antral follicle count (AFC), a well-accepted marker of ovarian reserve, among women from a fertility center.

Methods: This analysis included 109 women in the Environmental and Reproductive Health (EARTH) Study who provided at least one urine sample prior to the measurement of AFC, between 2007 and 2016. We quantified urinary triclosan concentrations by tandem mass spectrometry and measured AFC through transvaginal ultrasonography on the 3rd day of an unstimulated menstrual cycle or on the 3rd day of a progesterone withdrawal bleed. Poisson regression models were used to estimate the associations of specific gravity (SG)-adjusted urinary triclosan concentrations (as continuous in loge scale) with AFC adjusted for age, body mass index (BMI), year of sample collection, physical activity and baseline infertility diagnosis.

Results: The median (interquartile range, IQR) of the SG-adjusted urinary triclosan concentrations for the 225 samples provided by the 109 women was 7.9 (3.0, 33.6) 碌g/L. Women had median (IQR) AFC of 13 (8, 18). In unadjusted models, one loge unit increase in SG-adjusted urinary triclosan concentrations was associated with a 3% decrease (95% CI= -5%, -2%) in AFC (p-value=0.04). This association strengthened after adjustment for covariates (-4%, 95% CI= -7%, -1%, p-value=0.009). Specifically, women in the 75th percentile of exposure (33.6 碌g/L) had a 6.6% decrease in AFC compared with women in the 25th percentile (3.0 碌g/L).

Conclusion: SG-adjusted urinary triclosan concentrations were inversely associated with AFC in women seeking care at a fertility center.

Conferencia 鈥淢easuring Productivity Change Accounting for Adjustment Costs: Evidence from the Food Industry in the European Union鈥.

El pr贸ximo martes 11 de julio a las 10:00 horas en la Sala de Seminarios del edificio Torretamarit, la prof. Magdalena Kapelko, de Wroclaw University of Economics, Institute of Applied Mathematics, Department of Logistics, impartir谩 la conferencia que lleva por t铆tulo 鈥Measuring Productivity Change Accounting for Adjustment Costs: Evidence from the Food Industry in the European Union鈥.

Resumen:

This paper extends the measurement of dynamic productivity change over time to provide its full decomposition into economically meaningful components in the Data Envelopment Analysis framework. The dynamic approach accounts for dynamics of production decisions via adjustment costs and is visualized as a dynamic Luenberger productivity change indicator. The paper also estimates the dynamic productivity change and its components for a large dataset of European food companies from 2004 till 2012, grouped into Eastern, Southern, and Western regions. The study reveals three main results. First, the overall trend of dynamic technical regress and positive dynamic technical inefficiency change across almost all regions and sectors was found. Second, some differences for this general pattern were found for the bakery industry and for Eastern European firms. Thirdly, there are also some remarkable changes in indicators observed during the periods related to the financial crisis and the volatility of agricultural commodity prices.

Conferencia 鈥淪mall-scale fisheries in Brazil: a not-so-invisible problem鈥.

Small-scale fisheries in Brazil: a not-so-invisible problem鈥.

Resumen:

Brazil is proportionally a relatively unimportant player in the world fisheries scenario. However, small-scale fisheries (SSF) specifically are crucial for local livelihoods and the food security of millions of people, both on the coast and inland. Such fisheries provide more than 50% of the total Brazilian catches, suggesting that they can be highly impacting on the local ecosystems, especially on vulnerable ones, such as coastal reefs. Despite having some preferential target species, SSF is highly diverse and adaptive, depending on the environment, but also on the socioeconomic context. For being mostly coastal and exploiting shallow waters, many of the stocks targeted cannot undergo intensive fishing pressure, which have put many key species in a vulnerable situation, with some of them being locally extinct already. Topping up the problem, Brazil does not have a fishery statistical program since 2011, and has been cutting research funding continuously since 2014. To partially overcome the limitations, we have been developing alternative, affordable and reliable tools to collect and reconstruct fishing data, usually with the support of fishers. As there is official interest in managing such fisheries either, we have to stimulate and count on participatory initiatives to implement management as well and to understand, counterbalance or adjust, when necessary, the general impacts of development projects and of protected areas.
